Dynaco PAS Preamp

In the early 1960s, when hi-fi was still a frontier for tinkerers and dreamers, Dynaco unveiled a piece of gear that would end up in more living rooms, dorm rooms, and basement workshops than almost any other preamp of its era: the PAS series.

One of the defining things about the PAS was the way it blurred the line between product and project. Dynaco offered it in kit form, which meant thousands of hobbyists cut their teeth soldering the boards, wiring the transformers, and learning, quite literally, how music was made. The result was a piece of gear that didn’t just play records, but that actually taught you about them. And because so many people built them, the PAS community became vast, swapping modifications, tweaks, and tales of how to squeeze more performance from the humble box.

Decades later, the Dynaco PAS is spoken of with a kind of fond nostalgia. For some, it was their first taste of tube magic; for others, it’s a reminder of the DIY spirit that once defined hi-fi. And though far more exotic preamps have since been built, few can claim the same cultural footprint.

The PAS is classic all-tube stereo preamplifier, running on four 12AX7s. Its design features a passive RIAA phono stage with excellent midrange character, an active line stage with tone controls, multiple inputs (Phono, Tuner, Aux, Tape), and a compact chassis that pairs beautifully with vintage tube power amps.
