Linn LP12 Sondek — Akito / Asaka
The LP12 needs no introduction in this room. Linn has been building the same suspended subchassis belt-drive turntable since 1972, and the reason it’s still in production — still being upgraded — is that the fundamental engineering was right from the start. This is the platform that changed how the industry thought about where hi-fi reproduction actually lives: in the source, not the speakers.
This example is fitted with the Akito tonearm and the Asaka moving coil cartridge — a classic Linn pairing from the period when Linn made everything in the chain themselves. The Asaka is a hand-wound MC that Linn produced in limited quantities; it’s genuinely rare now and was considered among the best cartridges Linn ever made. Tight, fast, extraordinarily musical — it tracked the way a Linn system is supposed to track.
Stylus hours on the Asaka are unknown, which is worth factoring into how you approach this piece. If the stylus is worn, it can be retipped by a specialist; the cartridge body itself is worth preserving. We’ll give you the honest assessment when you come in.
The LP12 is fully upgradeable from this starting point — Keel, Radikal, Karousel, Urika — there’s a path forward for it. That’s what makes a used LP12 different from most turntables: it’s a platform, not just a piece.
