Brown Electronic Labs (BEL) 1001 MkII Stereo & Mono Power Amplifier
Some gear shows up so rarely, we have to pinch ourselves when it lands on the bench. The BEL 1001 MkII is one of those pieces. Hand-built in San Jose by Richard Brown, this amplifier carries the DNA of a designer obsessed with getting the essentials right.
Rated at 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms (and a gutsy 100 into 4), the 1001 MkII is deceptively modest on paper. Flip it into bridged mono and it’ll push 200 watts with the kind of grip that surprises even seasoned listeners. What makes it special, though, isn’t just the numbers. It’s the way it brings music to life: bass that feels tight and alive, mids with natural weight, and highs that extend without glare. The sound has that addictive “where did the evening go?” quality that keeps you in the chair for one more record… and then another.
Like all things BEL, the 1001 MkII is scarce. Production was extremely limited, documentation even more so. That scarcity has only added to its cult status, with fans who will swear it outperforms amps twice its size and price.
This unit is in excellent operating condition, with only minor cosmetic signs of its age. It’s been tested, listened to, and certified ready for its next adventure. Whether you run it in stereo for a refined, low-key system or stack a pair for bridged mono mayhem, you’ll understand why the BEL is a name whispered with reverence in audiophile circles.
